A "brass v drape" is a sterile, calibrated obstetric drape used during childbirth to accurately measure blood loss. It is a disposable, under-buttocks drape that folds into a pouch to collect blood after delivery, allowing for a more precise measurement than visual estimation alone. The "brass" in the name refers to the device's objective nature in quantifying blood loss, a critical factor in diagnosing and managing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). 

How it works 

The drape is placed under the patient's buttocks during delivery.

After the baby is born, the drape's calibrated pouch is used to collect blood and other fluids.

The amount of blood can be read directly from the markings on the drape.

This allows for a more accurate measurement of blood loss, compared to visual estimations that can be unreliable. 

Purpose 

Objective measurement: It provides a quantitative method for measuring blood loss, which is crucial for accurately diagnosing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).

Early detection: By providing a clear and objective measurement, it helps in the early recognition of PPH.
